Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) is a multi-cultural complex located at Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station in Seoul, Korea. Since its opening in 2014, DDP has staged diverse cultural events including exhibitions, fashion shows, product launch shows, forums, and conferences. It’s known as a hub where new products and fashion is introduced, expanding throughout Asia and the world. The form of the Dongdaemun Design Plaza and Park revolves around the ancient city wall, which forms the central element of the composition, creating a continuous landscape that physically links the park and plaza together. "The design integrates the park and plaza seamlessly as one, blurring the boundary between architecture and nature in a continuous, fluid landscape," said Zaha Hadid Architects in a statement. Designed by the late Zaha Hadid, this neofuturistic cultural complex was commissioned to replace the Dongdaemun Stadium, built during Japanese rule in the 1920s.

Later, it was once again renamed to the Dongdaemun Sports Complex, but its utilization decreased following the construction of the Jamsil Sports Complex in preparation for the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Situated in Dongdaemun, Dongdaemun-gu, an ancient fortress wall, once served as a protective barrier for Hanyang, the capital of Chosun. However, the scars of war and urban expansion significantly impacted its physical integrity. In 1889, its initial damage was inflicted to make way for a trolley railway, integrating Seoul's Seodaemun and Cheongnyangni districts. Illicit residential development and unsanctioned post-Korean War construction perpetuated the erosion of the wall's remaining structure. While most of the larger structures are spaces for exhibitions, there is a hall of food shops.

Throughout the Dongdaemun Design Plaza design process, every building requirement was considered as a set of inter-related spatial relationships which will define the social interactions and behavioural structure in/around the project. These relationships became the framework of the design, defining how different aspects of the project, such as spatial organization, programmatic requirements, and engineering come together. The British Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid designed the Dongdaemun Design Plaza, a marvelous structure. The building is created in a spacious area with a space frame system, a large roof truss, and a fabulous building model. The main attributes of this design by Hadid were porousness, transparency, and durability.
Dubbed the 'largest three-dimensional atypical structure in the world', the undulating aluminium and concrete landmark comprises galleries, event spaces, design shops and lawns that rise up to its roof. The attached Dongdaemun History & Culture Park includes museums that highlight past uses of this area, such as a 16th-century military camp. The completed façade incorporates a field of pixilation and perforation patterns, which creates dynamic visual effect depending on the lighting conditions and seasonal changes. It will take on different characters as the external condition changes. Sometimes, it will look as a singular entity; sometimes, it blends with the surrounding landscape as part of the complete ensemble of Dongdaemun.

The 'southeast gate' of Seoul's fortress wall, Gwanghuimun is far smaller and more modest than Heunginjimun. The Dongdaemun District was initially created in 1943 with the “gu” system initiated and bigger in area than today. Seongbuk District got separated from the district in 1949, and Changsin Dong and Sungin Dong were given to the Jongo District in 1975. The special thing about Dongdaemun Fashion Street is that the stores all have trendy designs, great quality, super-fast processes, and small batch production.
At night, the building will reflect all the LED lights and neon signs of the surrounding buildings. With the interplay of the built-in façade lighting, the building’s appearance will be animated and take on the characteristics of its unique urban settings.
