The DDP is an architectural landscape that revolves around the ancient city wall and cultural artefacts discovered during archaeological excavations preceding DDP’s construction. These historic features form the central element of DDP’s composition; linking the park, plaza and city together. The main building of the DDP is about 280 meters long, and it has three levels under the ground and four levels above the ground. The building has several giant public areas, including a design lab, exhibition all, academy lab, design museum, conference hall, Dongdaemun culture and history park, design market, etc. The DDP also has underground spaces, a parking area, a feeding room, dispensaries, a cafe, a coatroom, etc.

The DDP is set to host five separate design and art exhibitions, featuring works from various designers, as well as collection of traditional Korean art from the Kansong Art Museum. Throughout the minimalistic interior, Zaha chose to fill the spaces with familiar design elements like solid acrylic panels, stainless steel, polished stone and glass fiber reinforced gypsum. Chaotic yet fluid bleached white acrylic branches and supporting features populate the interior, alongside juxtaposed design touches like unfinished concrete and stainless steel.

Hadid focused on the dynamism of the Dongdaemun area, which is in a state of constant flux from the early morning to late at night. Her design, entitled “Metonymic Landscape,” uses the historical, cultural, social, and economic characteristics of the Dongdaemun area as its foundation and adds futuristic values and vision to it. Hadid created a space that flows without boundaries, based on her observations of the region's continuously changing dynamics. The façade itself is not solid; instead it incorporates a field of pixilation and perforations, that together create a changing visual dynamic that shifts depending on lighting and seasonal conditions. For instance at night, the changing façade reflects Dongdaemun’s many lights and signage, turning the project into one giant illuminated structure.
Architecture of Dongdaemun Design Plaza
Facilities include exhibition galleries, convention and seminar rooms, a design museum, and a library and education centre. The building features a shapely facade made up of 45,000 aluminium panels of varying sizes and curvatures. This was achieved using advanced 3-dimensional digital construction services, making DDP the first public building in Korea to utilise the technology.
These technologies helped to maintain the original design aspiration throughout the construction of Dongdaemun Design Plaza. DDP opens to the public on 21 March 2014 by hosting Korean Fashion Week. DDP will also host five separate design and art exhibitions featuring works by modern designers as well as the prized collection of traditional Korean art of the Kansong Art Museum.
The DDP façade cladding system is an exemplary result of such a process. Construction the exterior envelope of DDP was a challenge as the cladding system consists of over 45,000 panels in various sizes and degrees of curvature. This was made possible by the use of parametric modelling with an advanced metal-forming and fabrication process to develop a mass-customization system.

A complex yet effortless building, the Design Plaza encapsulates the energy of the cultural hub in Dongdaemun, an area that has itself earned the nickname of the "town that never sleeps" thanks to its late-night fashion market. The first architecture present in place of DDP was the Dongdaemun stadium. The stadium was built during the reign of a Japanese colony for the wedding ceremony of the Japanese prince. From that time, several sports and Olympic events until the year 2017, the date of the stadium’s demolition. The team were able to have greater control of the design and details, with much greater precision than a conventional construction process; giving the client and the contractors a much better understanding and control of the project. DDP is the first public project in Korea to utilize the 3-Dimensional Building Information Modelling (BIM) and other digital tools in construction.
